1962
April 17, 2012 0 CommentsThis video was posted by Youtube user "bkendall41" and was not taken by my family in 1962.
I first came to San Blas in 1962 with my mother, five siblings and my two invisible friends. I was seven years old, my oldest brother was 15. Robbie and Omar are sorta ageless. Not sure why we stopped here in San Blas on our way to live in Guadalajara, but we did and so I always remembered the cool little pirate town all through my boyhood. Three days which became a window on my future.
Just to start things clearly, I wasnt made in Mexico, but
Alma Rita was. In 1992 it was "Look out San Blas - here comes one
gringo con una chilanga. Chilanga is a
supposed derogatory term for someone from Mexico City,
and Gringo is.....well, the one used for us gringos. I
am Maid in Mexico.
Forty eight years later and I am wondering who fired the maid? Had I not forgotten to take my memory pills I would realize it was me. I should end this entry, close my Facebook and put on my apron. There are rooms that need cleaning.
We pulled up to the Hotel Playa Hermosa on a very hot,
humid sultry day in June of 1962. Nothing unusual there. This
enormous palace with red carpet leading from the parking lot to the
lobby seemed to be squashed in between the jungle and the Pacific.
It seemed quite a distance from town and stuck smack in the middle
of what could have been paradise. Us kids immediately hit the ocean
for a cool off. We were definitely surprised to find the
water at about bath temperature and that was just our first
surreal surprise. Wasn't long before all these crazy
people were dancing up and down on the beach, yelling towards us
and waving their arms like crazy. We laughed. Those crazy
Mexicans - until my brother turns toward the sea and yells
"Sharks!" I do remember the fins starting to circle in on
us.......
Well, we did hot-tail it out of the ocean and
into their pool........whew! OK, wow lived through
that.
The sun began to set, and hunger started to set in. Mom
called us in to ready ourselves for a trip to town, and
dinner.
We had no idea of what was about to attack us next, and
successfuly. There were (and still are) these little vampires
with teeth - or are they just little wings with teeth?
Stingers? Wings and stingers? We had no idea, as
these little demons were practically
invisible.
